"Those
who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that last
as long as life endures." Rachel Carson
Margaret painted these landscapes while on three trips to France. The newest ones at the top of the page were done in the Pyrenees region in May and June, 2009. The Breton paintings were done in August, 2006 while on a residency in the city of Dinan, Brittany. The rest were done in July, 2005 while she was teaching in the Perigord. Her landscapes are all painted en plein air. Working on site forces one to react quickly to the subject. She lets the landscape speak to her and dictate the style in which she will work. It is impossible to paint wet into wet in the desert or on dry paper in northern Maine. The large paintings were done while working on location for about four hours. Then Margaret returns to the studio where she studies the painting and reinforces the values and colors in order to create a painting and not be just a slave to the view in front of her. In the studio is where the brain takes over from the heart. The small paintings are painted in a 9" x 12" watercolor sketchbook with a small watercolor travel kit which she carries with her wherever she goes so she can take advantage of short breaks during lunch or a coffee stop and quickly capture her surroundings.
